Job Description

We have an exciting opportunity for a Public Works Utility Operator II or III to join our team. This is a permanent, full-time position offering competitive pay and a comprehensive benefits package, including participation in the Local Authorities Pension Plan (LAPP).

Position Overview

Reporting to the Director of Public Works, the Utility Operator is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the water and wastewater systems in accordance with Alberta Environment’s Code of Practice. This role also includes operating various types of municipal equipment and assisting with public works projects in a team environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain water, sewer, and stormwater facilities, including pumps and valves.
  • Operate within Alberta Environment’s Code of Practice to ensure safe drinking water.
  • Maintain accurate records in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Perform sanitary and storm sewer repairs as required.
  • Operate a variety of municipal equipment and hand tools safely and efficiently.
  • Conduct seasonal maintenance, such as hydrant flushing, winterization, line flushing, sewer flushing, and valve exercising.
  • Perform hazard assessments and safety inspections, actively supporting the organization’s Health and Safety Program.
  • Respond to emergency call-outs as needed.
  • Assist with public works projects, infrastructure maintenance, and general labour tasks.
  • Work shift schedules, including weekends and evenings, as required.

Qualifications

Qualifications & Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid Class 3 Driver’s License with Q Endorsement.
  • Provincial Certification in:
    • Water Distribution Level 2
    • Water Treatment Level 2 (Preference for Level 3)
    • Wastewater Collection Level 2
    • Wastewater Treatment Level 1
  • Knowledge of S.C.A.D.A. systems.
  • Physical capability to perform various manual tasks.
  • Experience operating heavy equipment and hand tools.
  • Strong communication and organizational skills with the ability to follow detailed written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to provide a Criminal Record Check and Driver’s Abstract upon request.

Additional Notes

Salary & Work Schedule

  • Annual Salary: $67,427 – $88,642 (dependent on experience and qualifications).
  • Standard Work Week: 40 hours (Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM).
  • Some weekend and evening work may be required.
